About the Course

This four-week online course is for anyone interested in telling stories in new and creative ways using digital tools. Guided by writer, editor and digital media artist Rory Green, participants will explore what makes a story uniquely digital—blending text, image, sound, and interactivity—and experiment with accessible platforms to bring their ideas to life. Whether you come from writing, visual arts, media, education or another creative field, this is an opportunity to expand your storytelling practice and discover the potential of online forms.

Each session offers practical, hands-on exploration alongside discussion and examples, helping you understand the possibilities and constraints of digital storytelling. By the end of the course, you’ll have the basics skills and knowledge to develop and publish a digital story of your own, and the inspiration to carry forward with your work in the digital space. If you’re curious about how stories can move beyond the page, screen, or stage—this course is for you.

Course Structure

Week 1: Decoding digital storytelling

What do we mean when we talk about ‘digital storytelling’? In our first workshop session we’ll look at a range of definitions, traditions and conceptual frameworks to help us think about born-digital work. What opportunities and constraints are available when thinking about this kind of work, and how should we begin thinking about these as storytellers?

Week 2: Interactive storytelling

Who has control in digital stories, and what effect does this have on narrative? In this workshop we’ll look at interactive storytelling forms and the interplay between author, reader and machine. We’ll explore how to craft meaningful choices for readers, as well as strategies for keeping track of both the big picture and the details when making interactive stories.

Week 3: Multimedia storytelling

Image and sound can transform written texts into multimodal masterpieces. In this workshop we’ll explore the unique characteristics of different types of media, and how they interact with one another to shape narrative.

Week 4: Digital publishing

There are so many pathways to explore in the digital storytelling space. How can we find out what’s possible, and figure out where we want to go? In this workshop we discuss digital publishing options and how to advance your personal journey as a digital creator.

This workshop will be held online through Zoom. If you have any specific accessibility requirements, please contact Bastian on programs@hunterwriterscentre.org, or call 0435 858 145.
