Hunter Writers' Centre serves the stories, writers and storytellers of the Hunter region, and beyond.

First Nations people are Australia's primary storytellers.

Hunter Writers’ Centre acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work, the Awabakal, Worimi, Wonnurua, Darkinyung, Guringai, Biripi and Geawgal, acknowledging the connection between storytelling and place.

First Nations stories, passed down through generations, are a source of wisdom, resilience, and identity, and give context to our understanding of history, culture, and the natural world. We are guided by the enduring legacy of First Nations story and its inseparable connection to Country. We commit to listening. We commit to change.

About Us

Hunter Writers’ Centre is a not-for-profit incorporated association serving the stories, writers, and storytellers of the Hunter region. With a core focus on writing and storytelling, our programs include writer and artist residencies, exhibitions, and an arts store at the Lighthouse Arts precinct on Whibayganba-Nobbys headland.

We offer workshops, residencies, fellowships, events, community projects, and nationally significant literary competitions such as the Newcastle Poetry Prize, Newcastle Short Story Award and The Grieve Project.

We envision a future where writing and storytelling thrives as a vital form of cultural and self-expression, strengthened by partnerships, grounded in craft, empowered by technology, and told by a diverse, inclusive community.

Mission

Our mission is to cultivate a storytelling and literary culture grounded in community, equity, and craft, providing pathways, spaces, and opportunities to develop, support and celebrate the diverse voices of the Hunter region, and beyond.
