Workshop Overview
From Dominic: I’ve been running my Learn to Write Good program since 2015, teaching 1000’s of people around Aotearoa and overseas. The class is built around accessibility and is designed to help writers at all levels develop their craft. I focus on teaching practical tools and techniques and breaking down complex elements of writing into manageable steps. My goal is to give people the tools to tell their stories in their voice regardless of their backgrounds and education. I’ve worked with everyone from professional authors, to rough sleepers to young people in youth justice.
I’ve designed this program to be what I needed when I was a budding writer. While I have plenty of students who have come through the university system, I don’t think a lack of formal education should be any hindrance to becoming a great writer.
I also make sure my classes are accessible to people with disabilities and neurodivergence. As someone with dyslexia I know how intimidating a classroom can be. I create a relaxed and fun environment and emphasise creativity and storytelling. I use simple exercises and real-world examples to engage students and spark their imaginations
Accessibility
Wallsend Library offers wheelchair access ramp via main entrance, as well as accessibile amenities and hearing augmentation (hearing loop). There is disability parking nearby, with drop-off and pick-up points available and public transport options as well.

About Dominic Hoey
Dominic Hoey is a poet, author and playwright based in Auckland, New Zealand.
He’s released two best-selling novels and written a million love poems. Through his Learn To Write Good programme, Dominic has taught thousands of writing students how to think dyslexic. He also works with young people through the Atawhai program, teaching art, yoga and meditation to help them with their mental health and self-esteem. He dreams of one day starting a rescue farm for wayward animals.
Dominic has over a decade of experience as a youth worker. He is the co-founder of the Atawhai program, working with teenagers to help them with their mental health and self esteem. He also works with teenagers in the youth justice system, teaching them creative writing to allow them to tell their stories.
