- 7 pm – 8.30 pm: A conversation and Q&A with local authors. We talk about their books, inspirations and literary journey. Hosted by Nina Cullen and Katherine McLean.

More than Coal by Dr Bronwyn Grieve
Stories we tell make a difference to how we view places, others and ourselves.
The Lower Hunter Valley is often viewed through the lens of coal; its production and shipping, but this book demonstrates the Hunter Valley is so much more.
In this beautiful book, the beautiful environment and nature of twenty-four areas of significant natural history are showcased through artworks and information.
This is not just a book to sit on the coffee table, it as a book to take with you when you visit these places, packed with ideas to connect with these sites with simple, inexpensive, anyone-can-do-them art exercises.
Dr Bronwyn Greive
As an artist with a doctorate in Natural History Illustration, I combine my love for the environment, the Lower Hunter Valley, and diverse creative techniques in my book, More than Coal: Exploring Significant Natural History of the Lower Hunter Valley and Creative Ways to Love It.
While I have drawn and painted for as long as I can remember, I have dedicated the last decade to deeply developing my practice. I thrive on the creative process. My work reflects nature across multiple disciplines, including textiles, drawing, painting, wearable art, sculpture, and murals—I have never met a medium I do not like.
My background in community development and education unites in my collaborative public murals. These projects celebrate local environments while passing tangible creative skills to others, rooted in my belief that anyone can create. As shown in my book, I use art to help people build deep emotional connections with the environment, because we protect what we love.
Alongside my art practice, my husband and I run Fosterton Retreat, offering accommodation and transformational creative experiences where guests can “be nurtured in nature.

Nina Cullen
Nina Cullen is a Newcastle writer and reader. Her prize-winning writing has appeared in Australia and overseas in publications including Australian Book Review, The Big Issue Fiction Edition, Meniscus, Island, Sleepers Almanac, Taste – Fresh New Writing, Imagining Ourselves, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Guardian. She is also part of the Newcastle Writer’s Festival Story Hunter program, taking creative writing into primary schools in the Newcastle/Hunter region. Katherine McLean
Katherine is the Director of Hunter Writer’s Centre. Katherine has over 20 year’s experience in leadership positions in arts and non-profit organisations, working across artistic disciplines such as theatre, puppetry, community cultural development, and digital storytelling. She has a great love for story and often spells it with a capital ‘S’ to give it the importance it deserves.
